Massage for health

I love massage! And I am excited to be able to pass on my joy with every treatment I do. I love that massage is something which feels good and IS good for you! Massage gives you a natural high, and on top of this you leave with looser muscles, less pain and a great feeling of reconnection to yourself the the world around you.

Therapeutic massage works on three levels - physical, psychological and emotional. Some of the treatments I offer focus more on one of these levels, but all treatments can be tailored to your specific needs.

Physical health

Massage works on the soft tissues of the body,the muscles and the connective tissue (fascia). The techniques work to break down the 'knots', loosening up the stuck muscle fibres. This allows nutrients to flow back to the afflicted area, and encouraging removal of waste products. The result is less pain and greater freedom of movement.

When muscles become tight or locked, sometimes they impinge on a nerve and cause pain or tingling in other parts of the body (e.g some cases of sciatica) so encouraging normal muscle tone can give relief to these conditions too.

Psychological health

We all know the problems of stress in our lives. What many people don't realise is that being in a constant state of 'fight or flight' mode leads to serious health problems including depression, anxiety and physical exhaustion. Our bodies and minds can only take so much "doing" - eventually we exhaust our resources and end up in a state of dysfunction.

Even if you are eating well and doing exericse, you still need to make sure you take time to rest and recover to stay healthy and balanced.

Many people spend a lot of their lives 'doing' and not much time 'receiving'. They have forgotten what it feels like to be relaxed, their sleep suffers, and stress rises. In today's world, taking steps to maintain psychological health is vital.

Our need for human contact is necessary. Without it babies fail to grow normally. Children who are not lovingly touched enough can become violent and more emotionally isolated. As our society becomes more touch deprived, I believe it is becoming increasingly important to promote good touch. Touch can be reasurring, and help remind us we are not alone in the world.

Massage provides a safe avenue for receiving human touch, and staying emotionally healthy. It helps ground and connect us back to our bodies, our sensations, and the moment. Sometimes emotions and memories get 'locked' in the body tissues and massage can help release these as much as the physical tension.
